Hearts Content Scenic Area

Hearts Content Scenic Area, National Natural Landmark in Warren County, Pennsylvania.

Hearts Content is a preserved forest area in Warren County, Pennsylvania, situated within the Allegheny National Forest. The site holds a mature woodland of white pine, hemlock, and beech trees, with specimens towering well over 100 feet tall throughout the property.

The area was protected from logging in the 1890s by the Wheeler and Dusenbury Lumber Company while surrounding forests were being cleared. The company eventually handed over the land to the United States Forest Service, ensuring this old growth forest would remain intact for future generations.

The old trees in this area hold deep connections to the land's past and show how forests develop when left to their own rhythms. Walking through these woods, you experience how nature creates layered, diverse spaces that shelter countless creatures and grow in ways shaped by time rather than human plans.

The area offers campsites with basic facilities like toilets and water access, making it a good place to spend a night or a few hours exploring. A trail winds through the old forest, allowing you to walk among the tall trees and observe the layers of growth without technical hiking skills required.

Some of the white pines here are several centuries old and have trunks so wide that multiple people could not wrap their arms around them. These ancient giants have weathered storms and droughts over hundreds of years, making them living records of the forest's long story.
