Struthers Library Building, theater and former library, opera house and movie theater in Warren, Pennsylvania, United States
Struthers Library Building is a combined theatre and library structure in Warren built in 1883 with brick exterior and large windows. The auditorium seats 902 people, features a plaster domed ceiling with a horseshoe balcony, and the stage is equipped with 82 theatrical lights and curtain rail systems.
Lawyer and businessman Thomas Struthers built the structure in 1883 as a library and public gathering space. After 1916 it was partially rented out for additional income, and in 1919 the theatre received major renovations including a new ceiling design and balcony. It later transitioned to showing films and vaudeville acts in the early 1900s.
The theatre reflects the role it has played in Warren's community life for generations. Visitors can see classical details like the lobby mural depicting Greek poets Sappho and Alcaeus, showing how the town valued art and learning.
The location sits in downtown Warren and is accessible by several routes. The building underwent major restoration in 2008 and now features an elevator, updated safety systems, and new seating to ensure comfortable visits for all guests.
The stage safety curtain features peacock designs and measures about 35 feet by 20 feet but is rarely lowered during normal operations. Beside the auditorium sits Sally's Encore, once Warren's Post Office, now a theatre bar named after devoted supporter Sally Sokolski.
