Ironton–Russell Bridge, Cantilever bridge between Ironton and Russell, United States.
The Ironton-Russell Bridge is a cantilever structure that crosses the Ohio River between Ohio and Kentucky. The construction features a total length of approximately 2,340 feet with two narrow traffic lanes for vehicles.
The bridge was completed in 1922 by the Wisconsin Bridge and Iron Company and served as the first highway crossing between Parkersburg and Cincinnati. It made safe vehicle travel between the two states possible.
The bridge connects two communities and serves daily commuters as a vital crossing over the river. It remains a familiar landmark for people who live and work in the region.
Visitors should note that the steel structure is susceptible to extreme temperatures and occasional closures are possible. During winter, it is wise to check road conditions before planning a crossing.
The bridge was originally a toll facility where vehicles and pedestrians paid fees to cross. Later the Ohio Department of Transportation took over the structure and made it free for everyone.
