Jerathmell Bowers House
Jerathmell Bowers House, Colonial house in Lowell, Massachusetts.
The Jerathmell Bowers House is a one-and-a-half-story colonial structure with a gabled roof, central brick chimney, and wood clapboard siding. The building sits in western Lowell and displays the characteristic features of American colonial architecture from the late 1600s.
Built around 1673, the house was one of nineteen garrison structures in colonial Chelmsford, providing safety for residents during armed conflicts with Native Americans. Over time, the property grew from its original defensive purpose into a larger rural estate.
The interior still shows the typical four-room layout from the 1700s organized around a central chimney, with narrow hallways and winding stairs. This arrangement reflects how colonial families in New England organized their homes during that era.
The house is located on Wood Street in western Lowell, positioned north of the intersection with Westford Street. Visitors can reach the area on foot and having a clear sense of the local street layout beforehand helps with orientation.
Jerathmell Bowers, who acquired the land starting in 1670, operated a distillery on the property that contributed to its economic growth. This mix of residence and commerce was typical for productive rural properties during that time.
