St. George Antiochian Orthodox Church

St. George Antiochian Orthodox Church is a red brick building featuring Romanesque Revival style on Bowers Street. The structure displays arched windows, twin towers, and traditional Eastern Orthodox religious symbols integrated throughout its exterior and interior.

This building was originally constructed in 1881 as a house of worship for French Protestants. The Syrian and Lebanese Orthodox Christian community purchased and renovated it in 1917 to serve their own spiritual needs.

The congregation here represents a Syrian and Lebanese Christian community that has worshipped together for generations. You can see how the religious imagery and symbols throughout the building reflect the spiritual practices that remain central to their gatherings.

The church welcomes visitors during regular Sunday services and weekday events held throughout the week. It's helpful to check the schedule in advance and dress respectfully when attending any gathering.

The basement of this building once housed the French Protestant College, an educational institution that later relocated to Springfield. That college eventually grew into a major private university that continues operating today.
