Kane Mountain Fire Observation Station, Fire observation station in Fulton County, United States
Kane Mountain Fire Observation Station is a fire lookout with a 60-foot steel-frame tower situated at 2,200 feet elevation. The structure was prefabricated and stands as the main landmark on the summit.
The Aermotor Corporation manufactured this tower in 1925 as a standard prefabricated model, a breakthrough in modern fire monitoring. It was built to protect the surrounding forest and remains a recognized historic landmark.
The station stands as a representation of early 20th-century forest conservation efforts, leading to its inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places.
Access is via a red-marked hiking trail from Green Lake Road, climbing steeply to the summit. Good footwear and plenty of time are recommended for this moderately challenging ascent.
An observer's cabin from 1960 stands beside the tower, showing how earlier fire watchers lived. It reveals the practical conditions of solitary forest monitoring work.
