Marie J. Desonier State Nature Preserve, Nature preserve in Athens County, Ohio, United States.
Marie J. Desonier State Nature Preserve is a 502-acre nature reserve in southeastern Ohio featuring rolling hills and deep ravines carved into the landscape. Mature beech, oak, and sycamore trees blanket the terrain and create a thick forest canopy throughout.
The preserve was established through a donation from the family of Major Marie J. Desonier, a military nurse who served as Chief Nurse of Europe during World War II. This gift made the designation as a nature preserve possible for the state of Ohio.
The Oak Ridge Trail system provides opportunities for visitors to observe native wildlife and plant species while traversing the natural landscape of southeastern Ohio.
Parking is available on Deep Hollow Road with direct access to the preserve entrance. The trail network spans about 2.7 miles and crosses Jordan Run and seasonal streams by way of wooden bridges throughout.
A system of beaver ponds within the preserve draws waterfowl throughout the seasons. These water features show how beavers have naturally returned to the region after being absent for a long time.
