Blennerhassett Island Bridge, Tied-arch bridge in Parkersburg, United States.
The Blennerhassett Island Bridge is a tied-arch road bridge that crosses the Ohio River between Belpre Township in Ohio and Parkersburg in West Virginia. It carries US Route 50 across the river in four traffic lanes, with steel arches rising above the deck on both sides of the span.
The bridge was built as part of a regional transportation effort that started in the 1960s to improve the connection between Ohio and West Virginia along US Route 50. Special design requirements were added later to protect the nearby Blennerhassett Island Historical State Park during construction.
The bridge crosses the Ohio River just next to Blennerhassett Island, a small island with a historic early 19th-century mansion. Travelers crossing the bridge can spot the old estate upstream, giving the crossing an unusual setting.
The bridge sits at the edge of Parkersburg and is easy to reach via US Route 50, which runs directly across it. Since it carries steady through traffic, expect more vehicles during morning and evening rush hours.
Engineers had to adjust the height and shape of the steel arches so that the historic mansion on the island upstream would remain visible from the bridge. This makes it one of the few road bridges in the region where a heritage protection requirement directly shaped the final design.
