Morgan G. Bulkeley Stadium, Baseball stadium in Hartford, United States
Morgan G. Bulkeley Stadium was a multipurpose sports venue in Hartford with a 1/5 mile dirt track and steel seating that held 12,500 people. The facility sat at the corner of Hanmer Street and George Street and included dressing rooms and shower facilities for athletes.
The facility opened in 1921 as Clarkin Field and was renamed Morgan G. Bulkeley Stadium in 1928 to honor the first president of the National League. It operated as a sporting venue until 1952 and was demolished in 1960.
The venue served as a gathering place where locals came to watch different kinds of sports in one location. Baseball teams, boxing matches, and motor racing all took place under the same roof, making it central to the city's recreational life.
The stadium was centrally located and easily accessible from different parts of Hartford. Since it sat in a dense urban area near major streets, visitors could reach it on foot or by public transportation.
Baseball legend Babe Ruth played his final exhibition game here on September 30, 1945, as a pinch-hitter at age 50. This appearance marked the end of his playing career and cemented the stadium's place in baseball history.
