North Dakota Mill and Elevator, State-owned mill in Grand Forks, United States
The North Dakota Mill and Elevator is a grain-processing facility in Grand Forks that turns wheat into flour and semolina for distribution across the region. The operation uses ten milling units and a storage terminal to handle the grain received from area farmers and prepare it for shipment.
The mill opened in October 1922 to help wheat farmers in North Dakota find better markets for their crops. It was created to protect farmers from high transportation charges that reduced their profits when shipping through Minneapolis.
The facility supports agricultural education by hosting international trade teams and serving as a center for milling research and professional training.
Most products leave the facility in bulk shipments by rail and truck, while smaller packages are distributed through different channels. Keep in mind this is an active production site where daily operations require specific safety protocols.
This is the only state-owned mill in the entire United States, making it a truly singular operation found nowhere else in the country. A substantial share of the profits flows directly back into North Dakota's state treasury.
