Pokagon State Park, State park with recreational facilities in Steuben County, United States.
Pokagon State Park is a protected area with recreational facilities in Steuben County. It covers roughly 510 hectares of forest, two beaches on Lake James, a nature center, and trails through rolling hills and open meadows.
The site was developed in the 1920s by Civilian Conservation Corps crews who laid trails and built structures in rustic style. The reserve opened in 1926 and now stands on the national register for its characteristic building ensemble.
The name honors a chief of the Potawatomi people who once lived in this wooded region. That memory remains visible through signage and the lodge, which preserves the connection to indigenous heritage.
The Potawatomi Inn offers overnight accommodation with rooms, suites, and dining options for multi-day stays. Visitors also find indoor facilities such as a pool, gift shop, and library in a central location.
A refrigerated toboggan track from the 1930s remains the only one of its kind across Indiana and runs from Thanksgiving through late February. Users can rent sled equipment by the hour and slide down the steep slope through the snowy forest.
