Robert and Rae Levin House, Single-family residential architecture in Kalamazoo, United States.
The Robert and Rae Levin House is a single-family home in Parkwyn Village, Kalamazoo, Michigan, built in the Usonian style designed by Frank Lloyd Wright. It features large glass panels, textured concrete blocks, and varying ceiling heights that allow the interior rooms to flow into one another.
Built in 1949, the house was the first to be completed in Parkwyn Village, a planned community of Usonian homes designed by Frank Lloyd Wright. Other homes in the neighborhood followed shortly after, all drawing from the same design approach.
Parkwyn Village, where the house stands, was founded by Upjohn Company employees who wanted a neighborhood open to people of all races and religions, which was rare at the time. This founding intention still shapes how the community feels to walk through today.
The house is in a residential neighborhood and is easiest to reach by car, though it can also be approached on foot. Since it is a private home, any visit is limited to viewing the exterior from the sidewalk.
Wright's original plan called for circular lots, but the Federal Housing Administration required rectangular ones before approving financing. Residents later planted trees along the boundaries to soften the change and give each lot a more defined edge.
