Sourland Mountain Preserve

Sourland Mountain Preserve is a protected natural area in Somerset County featuring multiple marked hiking trails that wind through woodlands and rocky terrain. The paths take visitors past diverse forest types and geological formations at varying elevations.

The preserve was established through substantial land donations to the Somerset County Parks Commission, which secured this natural landscape for long-term protection. Private conservation efforts made the creation of this woodland refuge possible.

Biology students from Hillsborough High School conduct field trips to the preserve, learning about local ecosystems and natural sciences.

Access to the preserve begins from a spacious parking area with clearly marked trailheads to guide visitors through the terrain. Wear sturdy footwear since the ground is rocky and uneven, especially after rainfall.

From certain elevated spots in the preserve, visitors can look out across an exceptionally far distance on clear days, creating a surprising connection between this rural woodland and the distant urban areas. This long-distance view highlights how close this natural space sits to major developed regions.
