Rockafellows Mill Bridge, Historic bridge in Raritan Township, US.
The Rockafellows Mill Bridge is a metal structure with a truss design that spans about 140 feet across the South Branch Raritan River in Hunterdon County. The narrow roadway accommodates one-lane traffic and was renovated in 2010 to maintain safe conditions.
It was built in 1900 by the Wrought Iron Bridge Company based in Canton, Ohio using methods typical of that era. The structure earned recognition as a historic property in 1990 and now belongs to a protected district.
The bridge connects two sides of the river in a way that shaped how local communities developed and moved across the landscape. It remains a physical reminder of how people built connections in this region.
The bridge is narrow and allows only one-way traffic, so drivers should be cautious when meeting other vehicles. The road sits directly in the river valley, so it helps to check weather conditions, especially during heavy rain or flooding.
It is one of the few remaining examples of truss bridge construction from this period, demonstrating hand-crafted engineering techniques from the early 1900s. Its role remained largely unchanged while newer roads were built elsewhere.
