Space Game, Steel sculpture in Menomonee Valley, Milwaukee, US

Space Game is a steel sculpture in Milwaukee featuring three geometric elements in black, red, and white welded together on a concrete foundation at Canal Street. The structure demonstrates welding precision and creates distinct visual lines through the arrangement of its components.

Created by Joseph Mendla between 1972 and 1982, the work was originally conceived for indoor display. It was later installed at the Peck Meat Packing Corporation, where it became part of the industrial landscape of the Menomonee Valley.

This work reflects a period when Milwaukee artists embraced steel as a material for public installations. The bold use of primary colors and geometric forms speaks to the industrial identity that shaped the city's creative community.

The sculpture is located at 1515 West Canal Street in the Menomonee Valley district and is visible from street level. The site offers good viewing conditions throughout the day, and the integrated lighting elements enhance visibility during evening hours.

The sculpture features recessed lighting elements integrated into its steel structure, creating entirely different visual experiences between day and night viewing. This lighting approach was an innovative solution for public art installations when the work was completed.
