St. Mark's Episcopal Church
St. Mark's Episcopal Church, Gothic Revival church in Augusta, United States.
St. Mark's Episcopal Church is a Gothic Revival structure built from granite with a prominent square tower and ornate windows featuring Gothic tracery. The exterior showcases quarry-faced stonework that gives the building a sturdy, distinctive appearance on Summer Street.
The original wooden structure was built in 1840, but was replaced with this granite church completed in 1886. Richard M. Upjohn, a renowned architect, designed the new building to reflect Gothic Revival aesthetics.
The interior features marble columns and detailed woodwork that reflect the skilled craftsmanship of the period. Stenciled decorations still cover the chancel ceiling, showing the artistic attention given to this space.
A parish hall built in 1959 sits on the grounds and once housed community services like a clothing bank and food pantry. Be aware that visiting hours may be limited, so it is wise to check ahead before planning your visit.
An original stained glass window depicting Saint Mark from the first wooden church is preserved behind the choir stalls. This relic connects the earlier building to the present structure, showing how the congregation bridged two churches across the generations.
