Capitol Park

Capitol Park is a 34-acre landscaped area next to the Maine State House with walking paths and open grounds. The space includes gardens, trees for shade, and wide areas where people can gather or rest.

The park was established in 1827 as a parade ground and later served military purposes during the Civil War. It underwent a major redesign in the 1920s that gave it the form visitors see today.

The Olmsted Brothers designed this space with formal pathways and gathering areas that encourage people to stop and socialize. The layout shapes how visitors move through and experience the grounds today.

The park is accessible from several surrounding streets and has benches and shaded spots throughout. Wear comfortable shoes since there are many paths to explore across the grounds.

This is one of Maine's earliest intentionally designed landscapes, featuring a formal row of trees leading to the main entrance. Many visitors miss this tree-lined avenue, but it reflects an important chapter in the state's landscape design history.
