Syracuse Air Defense Sector

Syracuse Air Defense Sector is a military installation at Griffiss Business and Technology Park that monitors aerial activities across the northeastern United States. The facility operates multiple radar systems and interceptor squadrons to maintain constant surveillance of airspace in the region.

The facility was established in 1956 as the 4624th Air Defense Wing, controlling military units across western New York and Pennsylvania. A reorganization in 1963 brought structural changes to its operations.

The facility maintains strong connections with Canadian Forces personnel, creating an integrated workforce of over 400 military and civilian staff members.

The site is part of Griffiss Business and Technology Park and was built with advanced technology for its era. Visitors should be aware this is an active military installation that may have access restrictions.

The installation pioneered the Semi Automatic Ground Environment system in 1958. This system used dual AN/FSQ-7 computers and represented a major technological advance in air defense.
