Thompson's Harbor State Park

Thompson's Harbor State Park is a nature preserve along Lake Huron's shoreline with sandy beaches, limestone bluffs, and forests of various ages. The terrain includes trails that run through these different habitats, connecting visitors to the variety of what the land offers.

Michigan's Department of Natural Resources created this park in 1988 with the goal of protecting the shoreline and its natural systems from development. The designation as a dark sky preserve came much later in 2016, adding another layer of protection to the area.

Bird watchers come to observe hundreds of species here, particularly during migration seasons when the park becomes a stopping point. The rare dwarf lake iris that grows in wetland areas is something many visitors learn about and help protect during their time here.

Access to the park requires a Michigan Recreation Passport, and visitors should come prepared for the terrain and weather conditions. The trails are open throughout the year, making it possible to visit in different seasons depending on what activities you prefer.

The dark sky preserve status means visitors can observe stars and celestial objects without light pollution interfering with the view. This makes the park a special destination for anyone interested in experiencing the night sky in its natural state.
