Triple U Buffalo Ranch, Buffalo ranch in Stanley County, South Dakota.
Triple U Buffalo Ranch is a 45,921-acre (18,600-hectare) buffalo ranch in Stanley County featuring open prairie with rolling hills and stream valleys near Lake Oahe. The operation maintains a closed herd of about 2,000 bisons and manages numerous man-made ponds throughout the property.
Roy and Nellie Houck established the ranch in 1959 when construction of the Oahe Dam displaced their previous cattle operation from the area. The property later shifted to buffalo management and has remained largely in its natural state since then.
The name refers to the three-part structure of the original homestead. Visitors can observe traditional ranching practices today as workers manage the herds across the prairie.
The best time to visit is late spring through fall when weather is stable and herds are easiest to observe. The terrain is rough and requires sturdy vehicles and appropriate clothing, particularly when crossing streams and valleys.
Each season brings different wildlife viewing opportunities from deer to prairie dogs that many visitors overlook. This variety emerges from the natural ecosystem that has gone largely undisturbed through generations.
