Washington Confederate Cemetery, Military cemetery in Hagerstown, United States.
Washington Confederate Cemetery is a military cemetery in Hagerstown located within Rose Hill Cemetery. The grounds span about 2.75 acres and hold the graves of more than 2,400 soldiers from Civil War battles fought across the region.
The cemetery was established in 1871 by the Maryland General Assembly to provide proper burials for Confederate soldiers whose remains were scattered across western Maryland battlefields. A monument was erected in 1877 to honor those who fell in the battles of Antietam and South Mountain.
The Statue of Hope Monument, erected in 1877, stands 19 feet tall and features an inscription commemorating Confederate soldiers who died at Antietam and South Mountain.
The cemetery is located along South Potomac Street between Spruce Street and Garlinger Avenue in Hagerstown and is easily accessible on foot. Visitors should approach the grounds respectfully, especially on days when commemorative gatherings take place.
Among those buried here is Colonel Isaac E. Avery, who after being mortally wounded at Gettysburg wrote his final message in blood. This personal remembrance of a dying soldier is part of the quiet history this cemetery preserves.
