Woodburn Circle, Historic district at West Virginia University, United States

Woodburn Circle contains three collegiate buildings constructed in red brick: Martin Hall, Woodburn Hall, and Chitwood Hall, arranged around an oval pathway.

Martin Hall, completed in 1870 as University Hall, stands as the first structure of West Virginia University and received its current name in honor of Alexander Martin.

These three buildings represent different architectural styles from the late 1800s, including Second Empire for Martin and Woodburn Halls and Queen Anne for Chitwood Hall.

The buildings of Woodburn Circle now house administrative offices, classrooms, and the Reed College of Media, serving thousands of students and faculty members daily.

The construction of Woodburn Hall in 1876 was funded through a specific state property tax that collected five cents for every 100 dollars of property value.
