Yarmouth Camp Ground Historic District, Religious camp meeting ground in Yarmouth, Massachusetts.
Yarmouth Camp Ground Historic District spans about 60 acres with residential buildings and pathways situated near two kettle ponds off Willow Street. The area is bordered by County Avenue, Willow Street, Wood Road, and Camp Ground Pond, containing dozens of cottages built over different periods.
Methodists purchased this land in 1863 for summer religious gatherings and operated camp meetings there for many decades. The meetings ended in 1939, but a local association later took responsibility for preserving the historic structures and maintaining the original character of the property.
The Gothic Revival cottages show how summer camp architecture evolved from temporary structures to permanent homes during the 1800s. Walking through the paths, visitors observe how residents adapted their living spaces to reflect both personal taste and community traditions.
The district lies south of Massachusetts Route 6 and is easily accessible on foot, with pathways running through the grounds. Visitors can explore the area by walking, though some buildings remain private residences with restricted access.
The site originally held tents where religious believers lived during summer camp meetings. Over time, permanent cottages replaced the temporary shelters, and some of these early structures still stand today, telling the story of how the place transformed.
