Elephant House

The Elephant House is a museum housed in a 19th-century sea captain's home on Cape Cod that once belonged to an illustrator and writer. The rooms contain original artwork, rare books, and personal collections that reveal how the artist lived and worked.

An illustrator purchased the old home in 1979 and lived there until his death in 2000. The house then opened to the public to preserve his works and collections for visitors.

The house displays work by an artist who created illustrations and stories with dark, humorous qualities that influenced how people read and imagined characters. Personal objects and handwritten drafts throughout the rooms show how creative ideas developed in everyday spaces.

The museum opens from April through December, so it is worth checking the schedule before planning your visit. The rooms are fairly small and intimate, making it best to spend time looking carefully at the items on display.

The home preserves a personal collection of approximately 25,000 books that the artist gathered over his lifetime. Among these are everyday objects like a distinctive raccoon coat that offer glimpses into his daily life.
