Sturgis Library

Sturgis Library is a public library housed in a colonial building with white clapboard walls, traditional windows, and a symmetrical front entrance on North Street. Inside, the rooms hold books, digital materials, and specialized collections along with work areas for research and reading.

The building began as Reverend John Lothrop's home in 1644 and later was converted into a library, making it the oldest library building in North America. The institution itself was established in 1863 when it took its present role.

The collection reflects the daily concerns of local people who trace their roots to Cape Cod's maritime past and early settlement period. Visitors can explore records that show how families and seafaring communities shaped the region over generations.

The building sits in a central location and is easily reached on foot with good visibility from the street. Hours are regular throughout most weekdays, so visitors should plan their research and reading around these times.

The wooden beams and foundation stones visible today date from 1644 and remain embedded in the structure. These original elements offer a rare look at how buildings were constructed during the early colonial period.
