Wynnewood, Log structure in Castalian Springs, Tennessee.
Wynnewood is a two-story log structure in Castalian Springs measuring roughly 110 feet long by 22 feet wide, with its stories connected through a central enclosed passage beneath a single roof. The building displays rustic construction from the 19th century and sits alongside historic outbuildings including a doctor's office and smokehouse spread across the 8-acre grounds.
Wynnewood was built in 1828 by three builders as a stagecoach inn on the main route between Nashville and Knoxville, serving as a crucial stop for travelers. A.R. Wynne acquired sole ownership in 1834 and operated the property for decades, making it a gathering place for those seeking accommodation and the mineral springs.
The property takes its name from A.R. Wynne, who became the sole owner in the 1830s and left his mark on the place through decades of operation. Visitors can sense the connection between the building and the travelers who once passed through seeking rest and the healing waters.
Guided tours led by the Tennessee Historical Commission take visitors through the main building and outbuildings on the property, covering the key structures in a manageable route. It is helpful to contact ahead since seasonal conditions and tour availability may vary throughout the year.
A tornado struck the building directly in 2008, yet its sturdy log construction withstood the impact and the structure underwent a major four-year restoration afterward. This recovery demonstrates both the quality of the original craftsmanship and the extensive modern effort put into preserving the place.
