Scaleby, Historic estate in Boyce, United States.
Scaleby is a Colonial Revival mansion near Boyce featuring a grand brick structure with large Ionic columns across the front porch. The main building spreads across nine bays and is surrounded by several outbuildings including a gardener's cottage, stable, barn, and other working structures on the grounds.
The mansion was built between 1909 and 1911 for the wealthy couple Henry Brook and Hattie Newcomer Gilpin. Its completion represented the finish of an ambitious building project that employed the most advanced construction methods of that era.
The house takes its name from an ancestral English estate that the original owners admired and wanted to honor. This choice shows how wealthy families in the early 1900s displayed their European connections and refined taste.
The mansion sits on a large property with multiple buildings scattered across the grounds that you will see as you explore. Allow enough time when visiting to walk around and view the different structures and the overall layout of the estate.
The building was ahead of its time, using a steel frame and reinforced concrete floors rather than traditional construction methods. These technical innovations made it an example of modern building practices in the early 1900s.
