Clifton, Historic residence in Shadwell, United States
Clifton is a residential building with a double-level porch and stands as a two-story wooden frame structure with five bays near the Rivanna River. The property includes several outbuildings: a brick office from 1833, remnants of a spring house, an ice house shaft, and a modified garage.
Thomas Mann Randolph Jr., a congressman and Virginia governor who married Martha Jefferson, built this house around 1800 as part of the North Milton development. The estate underwent significant modifications and changes in use during the 1800s and 1900s.
The interior displays Federal architectural elements, while the exterior shows Colonial Revival features added during the 1800s and 1900s. This mix of styles reflects how the building adapted over time.
The location near the Rivanna River provides access to walking routes and river activities. Visiting the multiple buildings on the property works best by arrangement, as this allows you to see all the structures and their details.
The building began as a warehouse along the Milton Canal before it expanded into a residence. Since 1983 it has operated as an inn and continues to serve this purpose today.
