Cool Spring Battlefield, distrikt historik në Shtetet e Bashkuara
Cool Spring Battlefield is a Civil War site in Virginia featuring terrain that ranges from open fields to wooded areas with visible earthworks and trenches. Walking trails wind through the landscape, passing stone fences and defensive positions that soldiers constructed during the fighting in July 1864.
The battle occurred in July 1864 when Union forces pursued Confederate troops toward the Shenandoah River, with Confederate commanders under Jubal Early defending river fords against crossings. After hours of intense fighting, Confederate forces withdrew following heavy casualties on both sides.
The site is open from dawn to dusk and features walking trails across the battlefield near the Shenandoah River campus. The main trail is about two miles long with markers explaining key moments of the fighting, though some sections are rocky and hilly requiring sturdy footwear.
A local soldier named John Carrigan originally served with Confederate forces but later switched sides to join the Union, showing how personal choices shifted during the war. His story illustrates the complex loyalties that changed individual soldiers' experiences on the battlefield.
