The Underground, Music venue in Allston, United States
The Underground was a basement music venue located on Commonwealth Avenue that hosted independent bands and performers starting in 1980. The space was intimate and stripped-down, with low ceilings and minimal decor that created the raw atmosphere typical of venues catering to smaller touring acts.
The space opened in 1980 after its founder converted an existing pub into a dedicated music venue for independent acts. It operated for roughly a year before closing in 1981 following a final concert.
The venue served as a meeting place for local and touring musicians, playing a key role in how independent music developed in the city. Performers from different genres found a stage there, shaping what audiences heard and experienced.
The venue was located in a basement and restricted admission to those 21 and older, which shaped who could attend performances. The below-ground location meant visitors had to descend into the space, making the entry a distinctive part of the experience.
During its final concert in 1981, attendees tore down the suspended ceiling and caused significant damage to the space while a band was performing. This chaotic ending also marked the closure of the venue and its brief run as a music destination.
