Boston University Bridge, Steel truss bridge in Boston, US
Boston University Bridge is a steel truss bridge spanning the Charles River and connecting Boston with Cambridge as part of Route 2. The structure features a distinctive green-painted central steel arch that forms its most recognizable element.
The original structure replaced an older drawbridge in 1928. The current name was officially adopted in 1949 following a student-initiated petition.
The bridge serves as a daily crossing for thousands of people moving between Boston and Cambridge. It offers pedestrians and cyclists good views of the river and surrounding landscape.
The bridge has dedicated lanes for motor traffic, as well as separate paths for cyclists and pedestrians. Expect congestion during rush hours, particularly when local events are happening nearby.
A railroad viaduct crosses beneath the bridge, creating a multi-layered transportation system. Boats pass under trains, which pass under motor vehicles in this vertical arrangement.
