Hill-Physick-Keith House
Hill-Physick-Keith House, Federal mansion in Society Hill, Philadelphia, United States
The Hill-Physick-Keith House is a three-story brick structure with stone stringcourses and large windows defining its formal appearance. A central entrance crowned by a half-round transom window serves as the focal point of its classic facade.
The house was built in 1786 originally for wine merchant Henry Hill. It later became the home of Dr. Philip Syng Physick, a physician who made contributions to American surgical practice.
The house reflects how wealthy families of the early 19th century lived, with Empire-style furnishings and elegant fireplaces showing the taste of the upper class. The rooms tell you about the daily habits and social standing of those who occupied them.
The house is located in the Society Hill neighborhood and welcomes visitors during warm months. The best time to visit is on weekday afternoons when foot traffic is lighter.
This is the only surviving independent Federal mansion in downtown Philadelphia and retains its original garden space. The garden has been replanted following 19th century designs, showing how wealthy households arranged their outdoor grounds.
