Hill-Physick-Keith House, Federal mansion in Society Hill, Philadelphia, United States

The Hill-Physick-Keith House is a three-story brick building in the Federal style, located in the Society Hill neighborhood of Philadelphia. Its facade features large windows, stone stringcourses, and a central entrance topped by a half-round transom window that gives the front a formal, symmetrical look.

The house was built in 1786 for wine merchant Henry Hill, then passed to Dr. Philip Syng Physick, one of the leading surgeons of early America. The name of the house reflects this succession of owners who shaped its history over the decades.

The rooms inside are furnished in the Empire style, giving a sense of how a prosperous Philadelphia family would have arranged their home in the early 1800s. Each room reflects the social habits and tastes of that period in a way that visitors can directly observe.

The house opens to visitors during the warmer months and is easy to reach on foot from other historic sites in Society Hill. Visiting on a weekday tends to be quieter than on weekends.

This house is the only surviving freestanding Federal townhouse in central Philadelphia, which makes it rare among the city's historic buildings. The garden behind it was replanted following 19th century plans, so visitors can see how the outdoor space originally looked.
