Polegreen Church, Archaeological site in Hanover County, United States
Polegreen Church is an archaeological site in Hanover County featuring steel frames that outline where the original church building once stood. The ground-level markers help visitors understand the layout and scale of this colonial-era worship space.
Founded in 1743, this was one of Virginia's earliest congregations outside the Anglican church. The building was destroyed during the Civil War in 1864, leaving only archaeological remains.
The site tells the story of how early religious dissenters gathered and worshipped in colonial Virginia, challenging the established church of the time. Visitors can see where this community found freedom to practice their faith.
The site is open to visitors, though guided tours and special events require advance arrangements with the local foundation. Basic facilities are limited on the grounds, so plan ahead for a comfortable visit.
Excavations by Virginia Commonwealth University uncovered the church foundation and revealed details about colonial religious architecture. Steel outlines at ground level today allow visitors to walk where worshippers once gathered centuries ago.
