Richmond Raceway, NASCAR racing track in Richmond, Virginia, US
Richmond Raceway is a motorsport racing track in Virginia with an oval course measuring roughly three-quarters of a mile (1.2 kilometers) in a D shape. The asphalt surface features banking of 14 degrees in the turns and holds grandstands for around 50,000 spectators along the circuit.
The facility opened in 1946 as Atlantic Rural Exposition Fairgrounds and served initially as a fairground with exhibition space. The venue became Richmond International Raceway in 1988 and was renamed to its current title in 2018.
The venue is known as America's Premier Short Track and holds a special place in the NASCAR community for its compact racing style. Fans often witness close battles between drivers who can overtake more frequently due to the shorter distance around the course.
The complex offers accessible parking near the entrances along with numerous stands selling food and racing merchandise throughout the grounds. Visitors should wear comfortable shoes and arrive early on event days as access roads become busy during race weekends.
The NASCAR Racing Experience program allows visitors to drive actual race cars themselves while professional spotters provide instructions through radio communication. Drivers receive a brief training session before taking the wheel and wear the same safety gear used by NASCAR professionals.
