Emmanuel Church at Brook Hill
Emmanuel Church at Brook Hill, Gothic Revival Episcopal church in Henrico County, Virginia, United States.
Emmanuel Church at Brook Hill is an Episcopal house of worship with Gothic styling located in Henrico County. The building features steep roofs, corner towers topped with spires, and a broad facade designed by architect Clifton A. Hall in 1860, along with a cemetery containing notable grave monuments and support buildings from the 1900s and 1950s.
The church was founded by Scottish families who settled in the area and sought a place for worship. During the Civil War, the building served as a hospital where both Union and Confederate soldiers received medical care and treatment.
The church is named after a biblical figure and was established by Scottish settlers who created a place of worship close to their farming community. You can sense how the building became central to the lives of people in this rural area over generations.
The cemetery on the grounds displays gravestones with inscriptions and monuments spanning different periods. When visiting, you can explore the various buildings on the property and enjoy the quiet rural setting that surrounds the place.
The church was established by the Stewart brothers, Scottish immigrants who first attended services at other Richmond churches before creating this community place of worship. This personal beginning shows how communities formed organically in new territories.
