Markel Building, Modernist office building in Henrico County, United States
The Markel Building features a distinct aluminum-clad conical structure with three floors wrapped in continuous metal sheets measuring 555 feet in length.
In 1962, the Markel Corporation commissioned architect Haig Jamgochian to design their headquarters, which opened its doors in 1965 during the modernist movement.
The National Register of Historic Places recognized the architectural value of the Markel Building in 2017 as a representation of mid-century design.
Located at 5310 Markel Road near the Willow Lawn shopping center, visitors can reach the building by turning left at Panera Bread and right onto Markel Road.
The architect personally created texture patterns in the aluminum exterior using a sledgehammer before contractors completed the remaining floors.
