Reynolds Metals Company International Headquarters

The Reynolds Metals Company International Headquarters is a three-story office building defined by its aluminum cladding and deep fixed overhangs. Bright blue adjustable aluminum louvers run across the facade to control sunlight and views while maintaining a sense of openness.

Completed in 1958, the building was designed by Gordon Bunshaft of the renowned firm Skidmore, Owings and Merrill. The project showcased modernist principles through its open framework and innovative use of aluminum as a primary building material.

The building marks Virginia's shift from farming to manufacturing and shows how aluminum production shaped the region's economic growth. It reflects the company's role in advancing industrial progress during the mid-20th century.

The 121-acre property includes formal gardens, a reflecting pool, and screened parking areas designed by landscape architect Charles Gillette. The carefully planned surroundings guide visitors through the grounds and integrate the structure with nature.

The building contains around 400,000 pounds of aluminum in its exterior cladding alone and houses original furniture by designer Eero Saarinen and Florence Knoll. These quality design elements make it a complete example of modernist aesthetics both inside and out.
