Rice House

The Rice House is a 1960s residence in International Style perched on a granite ridge high above the James River in Richmond. The structure with flat roofs, concrete walls, and large glass panels commands views of the river and surrounding landscape.

Richard Neutra, a pioneer of International Style design, created this residence between 1962 and 1965 for Walter Rice, an executive at Reynolds Metals. Its completion came as this architectural approach was gaining momentum across America.

The house displays modern international design through its flat roofs, concrete surfaces, and expansive windows typical of 1960s minimalism. Visitors notice how the spaces intentionally blur the lines between interior and exterior living.

Access is via Old Locke Lane with the site elevated roughly 110 feet (33 meters) above the James River and parking available on the property. The location offers good views from nearly every area of the house.

Georgia marble was used in the construction for surfaces and details, an unexpected luxury touch in this austere modern building. This material blend shows how Neutra wove refined textures into his restrained designs.
