Byrd Park, Municipal park in Richmond, Virginia
Byrd Park is a large municipal park in Richmond, Virginia, built around three lakes named Fountain, Swan, and Shields, with open lawns and walking paths throughout. The grounds also include tennis courts, softball fields, and an outdoor amphitheater.
The land that became Byrd Park was developed in 1873 as part of a city waterworks project that required a reservoir. That early infrastructure shaped the landscape of lakes and open ground that later became a public park.
Dogwood Dell Amphitheater is an outdoor stage that hosts free performances during the summer, drawing locals for concerts and theater under the open sky. On the Fourth of July, crowds gather here for Richmond's fireworks celebration.
The park is easy to walk through, with paths connecting the lakes and main areas. A concession building near Fountain Lake provides restrooms and refreshments, which makes longer visits more comfortable.
The Virginia War Memorial Carillon is a tower with 56 bells, standing about 200 feet (60 meters) tall, dedicated to Virginians who died in World War I. Despite standing in the middle of the park, many visitors walk past it without stopping.
