The park system's name comes from the James River it follows, and its sections carry local names such as Pony Pasture Rapids, Texas Beach and Ancarrow's Landing. Volunteers have long been part of its upkeep: manager Ralph White engaged community groups in cleanups during his 32-year career, which ended with his retirement in December 2012.

The system has several entry points and parking areas that provide access to different sections throughout the grounds. Visitors should check weather conditions and wear appropriate footwear, as trail conditions vary by season.

Goats occasionally graze in the park to help remove invasive plants from the trails and natural areas. This unconventional approach demonstrates a practical solution for maintaining the landscape.
