CSX A-Line Bridge

The CSX A-Line Bridge extends 2,200 feet across the James River with a concrete arch design supporting two parallel railroad tracks for freight and passenger trains.

The current concrete structure, completed in 1919, replaced an 1889 steel truss bridge to accommodate increased rail traffic between Richmond and Washington D.C.

The bridge design by John Edwin Greiner incorporates architectural elements reminiscent of Roman engineering with its series of large and small concrete arches.

This double-track bridge functions as a main connection point in the eastern corridor, allowing trains to bypass downtown Richmond while crossing the James River.

Stone piers from the original 1889 structure remain visible beneath the water surface, providing physical evidence of the bridge's engineering evolution.
