Stonewall Jackson Statue, Bronze equestrian monument in Monument Avenue, Richmond, United States.
The Stonewall Jackson Statue is a bronze equestrian figure on Monument Avenue in Richmond, United States. The general sits mounted on his horse above a granite pedestal roughly 20 feet tall and 18 feet long.
Sculptor Frederick William Sievers created this memorial in 1919 as part of a series of monuments along Monument Avenue. The work was removed from its location at the intersection with North Arthur Ashe Boulevard on July 1, 2020.
The statue represents a period of Southern commemorative art that emerged during the early twentieth century to honor Civil War military leaders.
The work stood at a street intersection and could be viewed from all sides. Today only the empty pedestal remains at this location.
The cornerstone ceremony in 1915 brought military cadets and schoolchildren marching through the city streets. The unveiling four years later drew thousands of spectators from several states.
