WTVR TV Tower, Broadcasting tower in Richmond, Virginia, US
The WTVR TV Tower is a tall steel lattice transmission tower in the Museum District of Richmond, Virginia. It rises well above the surrounding residential and museum buildings, making it easy to spot from nearby streets.
The tower was completed in 1953, when television was expanding rapidly across the United States after World War II. It is one of the early broadcast structures still standing from that period of growth in American cities.
WTVR-TV used the tower's silhouette as a visual symbol in its news broadcasts during the 1980s and early 1990s. At the time, the image of the tower was enough to signal to viewers that they were watching local Richmond television.
The tower is easily seen from the public streets around the Museum District without needing to enter any property. Viewing it from the street is the only option for visitors, as the site itself is not open to the public.
The Tower Building directly across the street takes its name from this structure and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It is unusual for a neighborhood building to be named after a nearby technical installation rather than a person or historical event.
