Martha Brookes Hutcheson, a pioneer female landscape architect, designed and lived at this property from 1911 to 1959 when it was known as Merchiston Farm.
The garden design incorporates Italian Renaissance principles with native plants including dogwood, lilac, sweet pepperbush, and elderberry throughout the grounds.
Located at 170 Longview Road, the center welcomes visitors from 8 AM until sunset, with self-guided tours available through seasonal cell phone programs.
An advanced rainwater system of swales, concrete curbs, cisterns, and catch basins supplies water to the house, pools, and gardens.
