Lindenwold Castle, Stone castle in Ambler, United States.
Lindenwold Castle is a 40-room stone mansion set on expansive grounds and known for its detailed carved marble fireplaces and gilded wallpapered ceilings. The structure represents a significant example of late 19th century residential architecture built with substantial craftsmanship and fine materials.
Built in 1890 for Richard Mattison, the estate served as a grand residential property for the wealthy family. A major renovation in 1912 introduced architectural features inspired by Windsor Castle, updating the design to reflect contemporary high-style aesthetics.
The castle reflects the work of immigrant craftsmen who brought their European skills in stonework and metalwork to Pennsylvania. Their handiwork remains visible in the intricate carved details and ornamental ironwork throughout the property.
The site is undergoing development, so access and visiting conditions vary and should be checked in advance. The location is easily reached by car from Philadelphia and surrounding areas, with parking available on the grounds.
A small lake remains on the property today, representing what survives of a much larger water feature that once graced the original expansive grounds. This remnant suggests the scale of landscaping and garden features that once adorned the estate.
