The Highlands, Historic mansion and museum in Fort Washington, Pennsylvania

The Highlands is a Georgian mansion in Fort Washington containing rooms furnished with period pieces and decorative items from the 18th century. The house preserves architectural and interior design features that reveal how such residences were arranged and decorated during that era.

The mansion was built in 1796 by Anthony Morris, a Philadelphia merchant of considerable wealth and influence. Morris was involved in early Pennsylvania political life, giving the property significance beyond its architectural value.

The formal gardens show how wealthy families organized their outdoor spaces with structured pathways and geometric plantings. Visitors can see how these arrangements reflected the lifestyle and social customs of the era.

The grounds are best explored on foot, with paths through the gardens and around the main building. Comfortable shoes are recommended, especially if you plan to see the outdoor areas in full.

The original 18th-century kitchen remains largely intact, with working bake ovens and traditional cooking implements on display. These tools offer a direct view into how food was prepared in the household during that period.
