Cuevas Las Cabachuelas, Protected cave system between Morovis and Ciales, Puerto Rico.
Cuevas Las Cabachuelas is a protected cave system spanning limestone terrain between two municipalities. The complex consists of roughly 60 separate caves connected by underground passages and open chambers.
The cave system received protected status in 2012 when Governor Luis Fortuño signed Law 129. This legal action established the natural reserve to safeguard the underground formations.
The cave complex holds meaning for the local community as a place of natural heritage worth protecting and understanding. Visitors experience how the region values its underground ecosystems through the managed tours and educational approach.
Visits work best when arranged for groups of about 15 people, as tours are organized at this capacity. Helmets and headlamps are provided to ensure safe exploration of the passages and chambers.
Research teams from the University of Puerto Rico study bat populations within the cave passages to learn about local ecosystems. This ongoing scientific work helps explain the biological relationships in the region.
