NEMA, Residential skyscraper in South Loop, Chicago
NEMA is a 76-story residential building in Chicago's South Loop district with approximately 800 apartments featuring floor-to-ceiling windows that overlook Lake Michigan. The tower combines residential living space with extensive shared facilities for daily use and leisure.
The site was originally occupied by Illinois Central Railroad tracks before transitioning to a development location in the mid-20th century. Crescent Heights acquired the property and transformed it into this residential tower.
Multimedia artworks created by Chicago-based artists are displayed throughout the common spaces, offering residents and visitors exposure to the local creative community.
The building provides extensive amenities including fitness areas, work spaces, and a boxing facility within its common areas for resident use. Ample parking is available and the location offers good access to downtown Chicago and the lakefront.
The structure uses a bundled tube engineering system that protects against strong winds while allowing spacious interiors without internal support columns. This innovative design approach enables stability at extreme heights while maximizing usable living space.
