St. Anthony's Rock, Limestone sea stack in St. Ignace, Michigan, United States
St. Anthony's Rock stands as a natural limestone breccia formation in downtown St. Ignace, created through the collapse of cave roofs approximately 350 million years ago.
The rock formation received its name from Father Louis Hennepin in 1679, while he served as chaplain priest for explorer La Salle during their maritime expeditions.
The geological landmark functioned as a concert venue and observation point for Native American communities before European settlement in the Michigan Upper Peninsula.
Located one block from State Street shops, the formation features an informational plaque explaining its geological composition and historical significance to visitors.
The calcium carbonate in groundwater cemented various rock types into a formation that withstood both the Wisconsinan Glaciation and Lake Algonquin's erosional forces.
