Skull Cave

Skull Cave is a protected limestone cave on Mackinac Island with a broad opening and a rounded interior chamber. The inner space resembles an oven shape at its deepest point.

The cave formed during the post-glacial Algonquin Lake period when water carved through limestone deposits. This geological process happened during centuries when the region was inhabited by different groups.

The name comes from human remains discovered inside the cave over centuries. Visitors walking through can sense the layered history of people who have used this space.

The cave is reachable through marked trails in Mackinac Island State Park. Wear sturdy footwear and take care on the paths, especially when conditions are damp.

A fur trader named Alexander Henry sheltered here in 1763 and to his shock discovered he had slept among human remains. This episode shows how refuge and history are intertwined at this location.
